Sometimes the simplest of things can bring us the greatest joys — St. Thérèse de Lisieux is a model for us in that. And this time of year is perfect to indulge in these little pleasures as we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection, coupled with the need to take care of our mental health during the normal stresses of our daily lives.
To inspire you with a few ideas of some splendid things you may not often take the time to enjoy:
A delicious dessert
Many parents might take the time to bake favorites treats for children, but shy away from indulging themselves. So bake a cake or another dessert you love and savor each delicious mouthful.
A warm bath
A relaxing bath is a luxury most of us don’t allow ourselves in our busy weeks. Schedule a time in the evening to draw a bath, place some candles near by, and play some soothing music as you let the warm water wash away your stresses.
A book you’ve been wanting to read
If you love reading you know the feeling of picking up a book and not wanting to put down. Schedule some extra reading time and read a few more chapters than usual — or tuck yourself in a little early so you can get some reading time in!
Sleeping in
This is trickier for parents of young kids, but arrange with your spouse to take turns sleeping in. Enjoy that time — stretch out, enjoy some extra slumber, read, pray, or do anything that helps you feel refreshed.
Time in nature
If you have a backyard, go outside, barefoot, alone, and lie directly on the grass or on a blanket. Feel the nature around you and smell the sweetness of spring. It will refresh you and fill you with gratitude. If you don’t have a backyard, try sitting by a window with a cup of tea or coffee, breathe, and watch the world go by.
A decadent breakfast
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why not go for a full on family celebration this week? Put some fresh flowers on the table, or a handcrafted version made lovingly by your kids, and feast on favorite fruits, freshly squeezed juice, and chosen treats. Whether it’s pancakes swimming in maple syrup, or toast covered in butter and jam, share it together. (For exhausted parents, it’s a real treat if older kids can organize this for you to have in bed!)
Satisfy those chocolate cravings
For all the chocolate lovers out there, never is there a better time to indulge in your favorite treat than at Easter. Try to get your hands on what you most enjoy. As you take a bite, give thanks for the gift of tastebuds!
A little pampering
Many of us don’t have time for facials, manicures, or massages, but a little self-pampering goes a long way. If you don’t have the right skin care products at hand, try making up your own using various online resources. You could finish it off by having a willing spouse or child give you a relaxing head or foot massage — if need be, bribe them with an extra piece of that cake!
A favorite activity — guilt-free!
If you enjoy sewing or painting, scrap-booking or stamp collecting, take the time for it this week. Allow yourself to focus on your hobby and give yourself permission not to worry about what’s “not getting done” around the house.
Chat with an old friend
Friends bring joy to our lives, and old friends remain extra special, but are often neglected in our busy lives. So set aside an hour and contact that old friend to catch up. At this time especially. your friend might especially be grateful for a bit of company over the phone.
