As head of Mother of Mercy hospital in the Nuba Mountains, Dr. Tom Catena relies on God every single day to provide lifesaving medical care.
Dr. Tom Catena, an American doctor who grew up in New York state, spends most of his time in Sudan’s Nuba mountains, a remote and isolated region, but his extraordinary work is known throughout the world. He is the only doctor working in a region that brutal civil war has repeatedly devastated.
The sheer numbers of his practice are staggering: The Nuba mountains are home to more than 750,000 people, and Catena is the only doctor permanently based there. He’s on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some days, he sees as many as 400 patients.
