Father Tolton recognized as venerable; may be first black American to be canonized

He went from slavery to the priesthood, winning over everyone with his virtue

Pope Francis has recognized the heroic virtue of Father Augustus Tolton, a man born into slavery who eventually became a priest.

With the decree, Father Tolton (1854-1897) is now recognized as venerable, a step along the path of canonization.
