Lady, help in pain and sorrow,Soothe those rack’d on beds of pain, May the golden light of morrow, Bring them health and joy again.
Happy Mother’s Day!
On this day we wish to extend our good wishes to all mothers, but also to the Blessed Mother, without whom the light of Christ would never have entered the world.
A celebration would be nothing without some music, and so we found this once popular Marian hymn (a favorite of great-grandmothers today), “Mother Dearest, Mother Fairest.” It is unknown who wrote the lyrics or the music of this hymn. In its first known publication, the 1913 American Catholic Hymnal attributed the work to “M.H” and “P.J.K & S.” The tune is also known as “Our Lady of Help.”
Performing the song is the Singing Nuns, a traditional group Catholic Sisters, members of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen. There’s something about nuns singing to Mary which feels so right. They perform the work with a beautiful piano accompaniment, which makes the song sound like a lullaby, perfect for a mother and babe.
