Scheduled to reach theaters April 12, Mary Magdalene is sure to be the “must see” movie of the 2019 Lenten season. The film follows the life of Mary Magdalene and attempts to do away with the popular fallacy that Magdalene was a prostitute prior to following Christ.

The official synopsis of the film states:
In the First Century A.D., the free-spirited Mary (Mara) flees the marriage her family has arranged for her, finding a sense of purpose in a radical new movement led by the charismatic, defiant preacher Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix). The sole woman among his band of disciples, Mary defies the prejudices of her patriarchal society. She undergoes a profound spiritual awakening, drawing her into conflict with Jesus’s apostles Peter (Ejiofor) and Judas (Tahar Rahim), and finds herself at the center of an earth-shaking historical moment.”
Taking the title role is Rooney Mara, and the next in a long line of actors to portray Jesus — Willem Dafoe (The Last Temptation of Christ), Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ), Ewan Mcgregor (Last Days in the Desert) — is Joaquin Phoenix. Mara and Phoenix previously starred opposite one another in Her and Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.
While the film was technically released last year, it has been slow to come to America due to the collapse of the Weinstein Company. It was thanks to the efforts of IFC Films that the film was salvaged and will finally reach U.S. theaters.
