The Christian musical group Unspoken announced the release of their first full-length album in three years. The announcement came with the drop of the album’s title track, “Reason.” The rest of the album is scheduled to release on June 21.
The group received help from several big names in the industry, such as Tedd T. (For KING & COUNTRY), Chris Stevens (Toby Mac), David Spencer (Hunter Hayes), and Jeff Pardo (Ben Rector) who all joined together to produce Reason. Of the album, lead singer Chad Mattson said that their inspiration was drawn from personal stories and vulnerabilities:
“Every song on the album speaks to some different kind of emotion or struggle we’ve been going through, but every one has the idea that God’s love is the reason—it’s the reason we have everything needed, it’s the reason we can love ourselves, it’s the reason we can forgive, the reason we’ve made it this far, the reason we can look in the mirror and be confident, to know we’re gonna be all right. “In the hard times, I’ve sometimes wondered ‘When is God gonna show up?’ But the truth is we’ve already been given the victory. That’s more than enough reason to believe, to persevere, to trust … This album is about sharing with people that you have a Reason.”
The new music featured on Reason adds gospel to the group’s long list of influences. It can be heard through the vocal work on the new single. The added influence does nothing to dampen Unspoken’s signature soulful-pop style. Indeed, the song sounds as though it would be home on any pop-driven radio station.
“The thing about soul music, the roots of this type of music is tribulation, it’s trials, it’s desperation … It’s why all of us relate to gospel music in some way, shape, or form. The themes of this record come from seasons of trial and tribulation, so it only made sense to add some of these elements sonically. It’s what this album needed,” Mattson describes.
The five-piece band has been reaching listeners across the world since its inception. Their 2012 debut single “Who You Are” was iTunes’ Top Christian Song of the Year and their follow-up, self-titled debut album made its way to the Top 10 of Billboard’s CCM chart. With subsequent releases, the band has achieved crossover success, reaching audiences beyond the Christian music sphere. They’ve toured alongside acts like MercyMe and Casting Crowns, sharing their powerful testimonies through song.
Next week, Unspoken will begin accepting pre-orders for the new album, which will include exclusive merchandise along with the bundles. Albums can be pre-ordered on their Facebook page. The band is currently on tour with North Point InsideOut and Caitie Hurst, through mid-April.
