Maybe springing a flash mob on an unsuspecting crowd might not be the first way you would think to celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation.

But when you think about it, and try to imagine how surprised the Blessed Virgin Mary must have been to receive a visit from the archangel Gabriel (who bore even more surprising news), it actually makes a lot of sense. Not much surprises us today — so if it takes a flash mob to bring home the still-shocking news of God’s entrance into human history, so be it.

On March 5, students from the Catholic University delivered that Good News on the Feast of the Annunciation by breaking into sacred song, surprising (and in some cases, visibly moving) a crowd of people caught grabbing a cup of coffee between classes.

The singers included students from Catholic University’s undergraduate and graduate schools, the Theological College, the John Paul II Seminary, and professors and members of choral groups.
