When a baby is born with special needs, we can be tempted to focus our attention on the problems and struggles the child faces. Newborn photograher Angela Forker, founder of the Precious Baby Project, is trying to show the world that these babies are so much more than their challenges. Through elaborate floor scenes she creates, which she calls “Baby ImaginArt,” she shows the baby in a world of joy, hope, and love.
Newborn photography is tricky, and photography of special needs babies — who sometimes have extensive medical equipment that can’t be hidden — is even more so. But Forker’s scenes, which she creates specifically for each baby, are a perfect fit. She builds what she calls the babies’ “accessories” right into the scene, unafraid to highlight everything that accompanies the child.
The result sends a powerful message: nothing about your baby needs to be hidden. Everything about that child’s life is precious. When we see a baby with special needs, our first response should be a smile, not a tear.
