The first Advent calendar originated in the early 1900s in Germany, when a family tradition of attaching 24 candles to a cardboard for each December day of Advent was commercialized by Gerhard Lang. Over the next hundred years, Advent calendars have become a quintessential feature of Christmas around the world. We know of many variations of this popular item, such as Advent calendars filled with chocolate and candy or with toys. But perhaps the most peculiar take on the Advent calendar so far is found in the imaginative work of plastic construction toy makers.
