The power of music was well known even before science confirmed what we already knew: music heals us. And at a time when more and more people are suffering from the effects of long-term stress, music’s healing abilities are needed more than ever.
Chronic stress results in irregularities in the body’s stress response system, which can also contribute to anxiety disorders, depression, stomach ulcers, and high blood pressure. But listening to music can help reverse these effects.
In a study out of Juntendo University in Japan, the effects of three types of music (classical, healing, and Japanese pop music) were tested on participants of a variety of age ranges. The study found that listening to music, especially that of the classical and healing genres, had three positive effects on the body:
- Improved heart rate variability.
- Increased blood flow volume (indicating a relaxing response).
- Rise in body surface temperature (indicating a relaxing response).
While the music was playing, participants were significantly more relaxed than when it was not playing, as the music helps to regulate their stress response system. So the next time you feel overwhelmed, put on some music (maybe even try some classical or healing music) and let the music heal your body, your mind, and your soul.
