As soon as he's out of pastries for the day, John Chhan rushes out to be with his beloved.

John and Stella Chhan arrived in Orange County as refugees from Cambodia in 1979, and they’ve owned and operated their business there, Donut City, for nearly 30 years. So when Stella suffered an aneurysm and ended up in a rehabilitation center, customers quickly missed her presence in the shop.

When customers heard the news, they mobilized the community to buy out the donut shop so that Mr. Chhan could leave to be with his wife. Using newsletters and word of mouth, customers have so far attracted enough customers to buy out the shop every morning, each customer buying a dozen donuts at a time.

When the shop runs out of donuts, Mr. Chhan rushes to be by her side. According to Mr. Chhan, his wife is still able to talk and write, but she’s still in the process of trying to eat.

Mr. Chhan’s devotion to his wife is moving, but so is the compassion of his customers. They obviously love the pastries, but they clearly also love this hard-working couple who have served them for years. Now that community is showing its support with a powerful action each and every day.
