“Abide With Me” is a 19th-century hymn with a text by noted hymnodist and Anglican clergyman Henry Francis Lyte. During his life, he published several volumes of original poetry and hymns, as well as a rather extensive collection of hymns based on the Psalms. He is credited with more than 80 hymns, many of which are still popular today.
The tune was set to a melody known as “EVENTIDE” by organist and composer William Henry Monk. Over the course of his illustrious career he composed nearly 120 melodies, but “EVENTIDE” remains his most popular.
The a capella rendition featured above is lovely, but if you’re interested in hearing a solo version, Audrey Assad released a lovely arrangement on her album, Inheritance.
