The crooner reveals how the harrowing last couple of years has changed his perspective on life.

The Canadian crooner announced he was quitting his successful music career after his son’s fight with cancer helped put his life in perspective. In an emotional “final” interview with the Daily Mail Weekend magazine, Bublé shared how this decision came about after he questioned his celebrity status.

Over the last two years the Bublé family has shared their painful journey on seeing their eldest son, Noah, now five, beat liver cancer. The musician and his wife, the Argentinian actress Luisana Lopilato, both put their careers on hold to care for their son during his illness, while also caring for their other son, Elias, now two, as well as adding to their family with Vida, who is now two months old.

The whole ordeal left its mark on Bublé who revealed: “we find out who we are.” But he also revealed how he’d lost his taste for the music business and realized that his celebrity priorities had clouded what was really important to him — “I was embarrassed by my ego,” he said with a humbling honesty. Although he couldn’t believe he was sharing the stage with his own music heroes, Bublé spent a lot of time being scared it would all go away, focusing on his own success, calling it “celebrity narcissism.”

Yet, when he understood that he had something so much more precious to lose his life took a huge turnabout. When his son was diagnosed he realized he needed a hiatus from the industry and to channel all his energy into supporting his family. However, since Noah’s remission the singer has rediscovered his joy for music. He worked with James Cordon on a special Carpool Karaoke for the Stand Up To Cancer fundraising campaign and has made an album, Love, to be released on November 16th.

One of the reasons he decided to make the album is “because I felt a debt of gratitude, deeper than I can explain, to the millions of people all over the world who prayed for us and showed us compassion. That gave me faith in humanity.”

But in a shock revelation, Bublé announced that the interview would be his last: “‘I’m retiring from the business. I’ve made the perfect record and now I can leave at the very top.” Whether he’ll change his mind in the future we’ll have to wait and see, maybe he’ll pick up the microphone as his young family grows and fills him with even more joy and inspiration.
