The village that communicates by whistling (Video)

Sophia Swinford - published on 10/02/18

This unusual musical language is over 500 years old.

Echoing for miles, the bird-like whistles can be heard and understood all over the hills of this remote village in Turkey. In addition to their verbal language, it’s a rare and unique way local residents have been communicating over long distances for more than 500 years.

Though it may sound impossible, the language consists of over 250 unique words, but only about 10,000 people in the entire world can understand the whistles. This incredible way of communicating continues to be passed down to future generations in the village’s schools, and efforts are underway to preserve it as an important part of the local culture.

Take a listen to the language by watching the video above.
