In the technological age, social media has become not just a portrait hall of our personal lives, but a center of social activism and a memorial in which to mourn and remember our shared tragedies. On this anniversary of 9/11, many are paying tribute via social media, with many calling for remembrance and unity.

One Twitter user writes, “Americans cried together. Americans grieved together. But most importantly, on that day, we came together. We are stronger together.”

The U.S. Navy shared a video of the flag unfurling in honor of those who died in the attacks:

Meanwhile, Mayor Greg Fischer called us to recall the “courage, resilience, and compassion” that followed great tragedy, and honored all first responders who serve us every day:
