Meet the couple who sailed around the world with their newborn

LOWRIE SAILING

Having a baby didn't stop them from accomplishing their dream.

Would you sail around the globe with a newborn on board? The answer for most people is likely a big fat no, but the Lowries aren’t most people. They made the decision to sail around the globe as newlyweds, and ended up becoming the first people to run the Amazon Basin (which they did mostly barefoot and dragging a trailer carrying their possessions behind them).

Katherine and David Lowrie had to take a break from their adventure when Katherine gave birth to their son, Theo, but it didn’t take long for them to pack up the baby and head back on the water, motivated by their love of nature and passion for conservation.

“We let him walk and crawl around the deck when it was calm,” Katherine said, “but one of us was always close. His balance was amazing — he could stand up holding onto the swaying fencing.”

In addition to a full medical kit and antibiotics, the couple also had a fenced-off safe zone to keep baby Theo healthy and safe. With no way to dispose of disposable diapers, the couple used only reusable diapers, which they washed by hand.

“You do need to be incredibly resourceful, and sailing will teach you it if not,” she said.

Now back in their native Britain, the Lowries have launched careers in speaking and writing,  while welcoming their second child. They can’t wait to get back on the water. For now, though, they’ve decided to settle for life on land, but with the right determination and devotion to each other they have already accomplished amazing things.
