Fr. Rob Galea is a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Malta in Europe. He moved to Australia in 2006 and is currently “on loan” to the Sandhurst Diocese in rural Victoria, Australia. He now serves the community as the Diocesan Director of Youth as well as filling the role of an associate pastor at St. Kilian’s Parish in the town of Bendigo.
In case you think it sounds like he has any time at all left in his days, Fr. Rob also serves as a chaplain to two Catholic High Schools (3,500 students) and local LaTrobe University campus (6,000 students). The Bishop of Sandhurst allows Fr Rob some time to travel to fulfil his significant evangelization and outreach ministry, speaking and singing at schools, conferences and churches around Australia and the world. From his home parish, Fr. Rob also produces videos and music, and develops school resources that reach out to young people all around the world.
Fr. Rob has recently written a book, Breakthrough, published by Ave Maria Press, and has also released six music projects to date. He will be releasing his seventh album and second book in 2019.
Fr Rob, you just released “Alight.” Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind it?
“Alight” was written with my good friends Timothy Chan and Joe Melendrez. This is a song about setting the world on fire with the love of Jesus. What an awesome grace it is that God would call weak people like you and me to be alight with the love of God and in turn bring this light to a world in need. This call of our lives has nothing to do with our worthiness, but everything to do with His mercy.
“In your Love I’m accepted – In Your Peace freedom” are the passages that struck us most. How would you describe God’s love to a teenager?
The love we receive from others is conditional. Only God loves us whether we are good or bad, feel worthy or not. Just imagine we understood that. Imagine we “knew that we knew” that we are loved absolutely at each moment of each day. We would stand tall, confident and with true joy and incredible peace and freedom. We would dance for freedom like a child before his or her parents, knowing that all eyes are on them and them alone.
Who is your co-singer in the video?
The co-signer is Joe Melendrez, an American Catholic rapper who is doing great work across the United States.
Did you really shoot “Alight” entirely with an iPhone?
Yes. Absolutely. This was shot on my iPhone 7 using a DJI Osmo stabilizer.
Which is your favorite song of all time, and why?
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” by Queen. A true masterpiece.
What do you have in the works now?
I’m currently working on a new album to be released in March next year. I’m also about to go on tour through the Philippines and then back to the USA. My book Breakthrough is also an exciting and recent release. There will be a movie made about this book. I cannot wait for this!
