You just finished an argument with your spouse, sibling, friend, even a stranger. Maybe you stormed out, or angrily hung up the phone, or maybe they walked away. Either way, you’re still feeling angry, maybe even hurt. You want to calm down, but your mind is reeling and you’re still shouting at the other person in your mind. What do you do?
Thankfully, Scripture gives us some beautiful advice for how to deal with arguments and anger. If you need to make peace with someone, take a breath and read through these two verses a few times. Sometimes we just need to redirect our minds, be still, and remember what’s most important …
From Ephesians 4:25-27:
Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. In your anger, do not sin. Do not let the sun set on your anger; do not give the devil the opportunity.
Colossians 3:8,12-13:
But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth … Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
