“Tell Out My Soul” was written in the mid-20th century by Rev Timothy Dudley-Smith. Dudley wrote some 200 hymns in his day, many of which are still in publication. During his career as an Anglican priest, he served as editor of Crusade magazine, Archdeacon of Norwich from 1973 to 1981, Bishop of Thetford from 1981 to 1991, and was also President of the Evangelical Alliance.
He chose a melody called “WOODLANDS” to set “Tell Out My Soul” — an early 20th century composition by Walter Greatorex. The garniture of the instrumentation accents the bold text and it is the primary melody used for this hymn. Both the hymn and the melody are their respective authors’ most famous works.
