With a little patience and flexibility, this hairdresser found a way to get the job done.

If your child has a sensory processing disorder, you may have experienced the challenge of getting him or her a haircut. What is usually a simple appointment for some can be stressful and overwhelming for a child with this kind of disorder.

Thankfully, one hairdresser has found a way to get the job done, with a little patience and flexibility. By allowing children to stand up and look out the window, by not asking them to wear a smock, Chris has made the process a lot easier for many families.

“For someone with sensory processing disorders,” Chris said, “getting a haircut can be really hard to achieve. There’s quite a formal process of walking into a barbershop or hairdressers. So, we try to break down that formal process, and that could be something as simple as not expecting someone to sit in the chair.”

Many of the kids bring in their favorite toys to distract themselves. By allowing a little extra time to accommodate the individual’s needs, Chris has created a welcoming and calm environment for people who might otherwise find getting a haircut the most stressful part of their day.
