According to parishioners at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hobbs, New Mexico, a bronze statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe has been seen shedding miraculous tears for the past month.
Several eyewitnesses explained to a local news station that after the celebration of Mass several parishioners “went up to the statue and found a puddle of an oil-like substance had formed on the floor below the statue. Another person wiped off the tears and … more tears appeared.” The parishioners notified the priest and many became very emotional after seeing the phenomenon, claiming it was a miracle. Many believe the substance has a fragrant smell, like flowers, and has flowed on several occasions since May 24.
Church manager, Judy Ronquillo, related her feelings to the National Catholic Register after seeing the statue, “You have faith and you believe in miracles … but there’s no words to explain what it feels like when you see a statue crying. When you see this, your faith is stronger.”
The alleged miracle has attracted a large amount of attention from the local area and beyond. According to KVIA, “Twenty thousand people from as far away as Hong Kong have traveled to see the statue of the Virgin Mary reportedly crying.”
The local bishop was immediately notified of the event and has already begun an investigation. According to Crux, “The diocese will first try to determine if the tears are a supernatural occurrence … This part of the probe includes laboratory tests of the liquid believed to be tears, eyewitness interviews and scrutiny of possible natural causes, including human tampering.”
The church remains open on a daily basis to accommodate the pilgrims who continue to pour in from all over the country to pray before the statue of the Virgin Mary. Many believe that the event is in response to recent events and violence in the world and is calling all people to devote themselves to prayer.
