The couple shared the moment they were "totally blessed by #popefrancis" on social media.

Legendary rocker Rod Stewart and his wife, Penny Lancaster had what was described as “unforgettable morning” meeting Pope Francis at his weekly Audience at St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday.

After shaking hands with the pope, Lancaster shared pictures of the moment on social media. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Special moment as we clasped hands together #popefrancis. All made possible by our charity bid ‘Pope experience’ at the #pinktober event for The Caron Keating Foundation.”

In another post, Lancaster wrote, “An unforgettable morning, totally blessed by #popefrancis.”

Stewart and his wife had attended a fundraiser for the foundation, which raises money for cancer research and treatment, in October of 2017, and contributed $20,000 to have a chance to personally meet the pope at his Papal Audience, according to an article in Hello magazine.

Married in Portofino, Italy, ten years ago, in a celebration that took place at the cloistered medieval abbey at La Cervara, the couple renewed their vows last summer at a ceremony in their Essex, England, home. Stewart and Lancaster are members of the Church of Scotland, and two of their children were baptized at South Leith Parish Church in Edinburgh.

Reflecting on that ceremony and their life together, Lancaster told Hello magazine, “When we renewed our vows, we said them not with just hope but with a reassurance. Along with hope, there is also faith, love and bringing all the family together.”
