Eighteen-year-old Deanna Recktenwald was visiting The Crossing Church with her mother, Stacey, when the Apple Watch she was wearing alerted her that her heart rate had risen to 190 beats per minute.
Stacey, a registered nurse, rushed her daughter to the hospital where the accuracy of the watch’s reading was confirmed: Hospital staff quickly discovered that Deanna suffered from a chronic kidney condition.
“Instantly I started to pray and thank God for her having that watch,” said Tom Recktenwald, Deanna’s father.
Stacey wrote to Apple thanking them for their life-saving technology, prompting CEO Tim Cook thank them for sharing their story. He tweeted, “Stories like Deanna’s inspire us to dream bigger and push harder every day.”

Though technology causes its fair share of problems, it also has benefits. In this case, it was potentially life-saving and helped detect a serious condition before it got even worse — a situation in which technology was truly serving the good.
