Postpartum depression affects more than 1 in every 10 women, according to the NHS, and in rarer cases postnatal disorders can develop into symptoms of post-traumatic stress and psychosis.
Though mental health advocates have made significant strides in recent years, significant prejudice and misunderstanding still surround maternal mental health, especially for those who experience debilitating symptoms.
In a recent Twitter campaign for Maternal Mental Health Week, many moms and those who love them banded together to post “shoutie selfies” to break the silence surrounding maternal mental health.
This is @adia_health 's #ShoutieSelfie for #maternal#mentalhealth. 1 in 3 mums suffer. Most in silence. Please support this #hiddenhalf by reposting with your selfie, tagging 5 friends & @MummyLinksApppic.twitter.com/UGI4aNm1zZ

During Maternal Mental Health Week and all year, help spread compassion and understanding by reading up on postnatal conditions so that no mother will have to suffer alone.
