This highly-rated, free online course on Coursera offers an overview of ancient Rome from about 1000 BC until the fall of the Empire. Taught by Professor David Soren of the University of Arizona, the six-week long course takes students on a fast-paced tour of Rome’s history through video-taped lectures and on-location footage of Rome’s archeological treasures.

Using graphics of maps, 3D representations, and actual footage of archaeological sites, Professor Soren puts the treasures of Rome’s history into context. Whether you are planning a trip to the Eternal City, or just want to continue your lifelong education, this course will give you a solid grounding in Roman history that will set you on your way for further exploration.

The course includes peer-graded assignments and tests, and while students may take it for free, a Course Certificate is available for a fee.
