Audrey Assad has dropped the fourth and final single before the release of her newest album, Evergreen, on February 23. “When I See You” follows the themes of her previous releases: discovery, redemption, recovery, and the healing power of faith.
Her use of long drone-like synthesizer patterns and rolling cymbals make grand ethereal sounds which give the impression of being weightless, suspended in wonder. The style is a bit different, but still undeniably the same Audrey Assad we all know and love. Of the album she said:
“I recognize that some of the themes and stylistic choices are perhaps slightly different than where I have been camping as an artist for the past few years, but I am hopeful that it will be a solace and sanctuary for anyone who needs peace and joy in their lives. It has been a labor of hard-won love and emerged from the deepest parts of my spirit.”
The album has been indeed been laborious for Assad, who has spoken openly about her bout of writer’s block over the last several years. Having found respite in her music, she hopes that it can serve others in similar fashion:
“I hope that Evergreen is a healing oil in the wounds of whoever comes across it. I am stumbling towards health and wholeness and I desire that for anyone who hears this music.”
The full album drops on February 23, but the fans who supported the project through her crowdfunding are already enjoying it. Evergreen reached 151 percent of its goal, with 5 percent of the total donated to the charity Preemptive Love.
