There’s nothing quite like experiencing artwork in person, but for those of us who don’t have that privilege, this digital artist might have just given us the next best thing.
In a video for Soul Pancake, George Peaslee has painted van Gogh’s “Starry Night” as a 3D virtual reality, allowing each of us to step inside and see the masterpiece from the inside.
Though van Gogh took considerable creative liberties, the painter found the initial inspiration for the iconic painting from the his view out of the window of an asylum. Having suffered a psychological episode in 1888, he checked himself into an asylum near Saint-Remy-de-Provence. One morning, while gazing out the window before sunrise, he was struck by the “morning star, which looked very big.”
“Starry Night” never sold in his lifetime, but he’s certainly received his due praise since.
