More than a perfect image that can take our breath away, the photograph that won Aleteia’s Lampstand contest represents hope for a better world. In an underdeveloped country, schools appear as the opportunity par excellence for many young people and children to change their destiny.
In Africa, in Benguela, Angola, there is a parish that is seeking restore the dignity of children and young people. In a neighborhood that was once a garbage dump, hope is now being raised that the destiny of a forgotten people may be changed. They are people who live under the poverty line, for whom the rights enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights are no more than a distant mirage.
That is where the K’esinha Ly’Eyau project (“From the Other Side of the Bridge), with its foundations in the constant presence of God, seeks to contribute to overcome some of the many difficulties faced by everyone who seeks to help on the ground.
In the photograph submitted to the contest, the directors of “From the Other Side of the Bridge” point out “three forms of Light. The Light of teaching, the Light of Christ, and clothing that refers to the Benfica Portuguese soccer club whose home stadium is the ‘Stadium of Light.’”
