In a speech heavily laden with religious imagery and references, President Trump told those gathered at the 66th annual National Prayer Meeting that America is “nation of believers” and that the God’s presence has made itself known throughout the country’s history.

“America is a nation of believers, and together we are strengthened by the power of prayer,” Trump said.

Telling the audience of members of Congress and thousands of invited guests that  “faith is central to American life and to liberty,” Trump noted that the country’s founders mentioned God four times in the Declaration of Independence, that “in God We Trust,” is on U.S. currency, and that Americans recite the Pledge of Allegiance, proclaiming “One Nation Under God.”

“Across our land, we see the splendor of God’s creation.  Throughout our history, we see the story of God’s providence.  And in every city and town, we see the Lord’s grace all around us, through a million acts of kindness, courage and generosity.  We love God,” he said.

Trump pointed to the presence “the Lord’s grace” in the sacrifice of service members, teachers, the police, and mothers and fathers holding down two or three jobs. He noted the examples of those who came to the rescue during recent disasters.

“As the Bible tells us, for we are God’s handiwork, created in Jesus Christ to do good works.  America’s heroes rise to this calling.  In their selfless deeds, they reveal the beauty and goodness of the human soul,” said Trump.

Applauding the efforts of the US-led coatliton in defeating ISIS, Trump said that more work needed to be done to free people from polical and religious oppression.

“We know that millions of people in Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and other countries suffer under repressive and brutal regimes.  America stands with all people suffering oppression and religious persecution,” he said.

The National Prayer Breakfast is an ecumenical annual gathering, attended by every president since Dwight D. Eisenhower.
