In 1983 Bishop Jerome J. Hastrich of the Diocese of Gallup extended an invitation to the Little Sisters of the Poor to come to and minister to the many elderly poor in the region. There was a particular problem for many older Native Americans who were unable to receive even the most basic care due to the rugged and rural conditions of New Mexico. The Little Sisters responded with their characteristic joy and enthusiasm, opening the doors to their first home in 1984. Their “family” grew as did their ability to provide. Today they have accommodations for 39 residents and an additional 12 independent living apartments to provide for the needs of those most in peril at this vulnerable chapter in life.

The hallmark of the residence is that of faith, joy and hospitality. Aleteia is privileged to share a glimpse of the daily life of those who serve Christ in the elderly poor, the same way  Saint Jeanne Jugan, founder of the Little Sisters, did some 175 years ago.
