GeoGuesser, the addictive mapping game based on Google Street View

Look at the clues around you, and try to guess your location.

GeoGuesser has been around since 2013, but if we’re arriving late to this party, maybe you are, too.

The premise is simple, but brilliant. Using Google Street View locations, the web-based game has you guess where in the world you are based on the clues you see.

How it works: The game plops you down at a random location somewhere in the world, and it is up to you to move around and look for clues, just as you would if you were using Google Street View to, say, scope out the neighborhood around an apartment you were thinking of renting. Maybe you recognize an Italian garbage can when you see one. Or the kind of tree that only grows in upstate New York. Whatever clues you pick up, the idea is to make a guess as to where you are. Once you make a guess, it will tell you exactly how many miles off you were.

Play it alone, or play it with (and against) friends. It’s insanely addictive, and you just might learn a little about the world and the people who live in it, close to home and far away. Click here to play.

Some locations have more clues than others...
