Michael Patrick Kelly was born into the popular band The Kelly Family. His career has spanned his entire life, having been on stage since he was 10 days old.
In 2004, Kelly became overwhelmed by the media attention and stresses of a lifetime in the spotlight. He left the family band and released his debut solo album, Exile, before deciding on a vocation in the Order of St. John in Burgundy, France. He spent six years studying and grounding himself in faith after a mostly nomadic youth. In 2010 he left the monastery and returned to writing music and has since released three full studio albums.
In an interview with a German publication, Kelly commented on his time at the monastery and why he left:
I used to be a very extroverted person. And in the six years in the monastery, I discovered my inner world, I am much more introverted than before. In the last two years in the monastery I became ill again and again and had to stop studies. Then the older monks had the insight that I was missing: They thought it was not my vocation, and I should make music again and look for a beautiful woman (laughs).
“iD” is the title track and second single from Michael Patrick Kelly’s fourth studio album. Its lyrics call for peace between us all, to allow each other to be ourselves, explaining “If we turn against each other, that’s not a game we want to play.” It features a stylish rap section by guest artist Gentleman.
