Their real name is The Daughters of St. Paul, but if you follow them on social media you probably know them as #MediaNuns. These religious sisters are dedicated to spreading the gospel through communications media, and you can find them lighting up Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat.
“I want to give people a peek of the everyday life of a #MediaNun,”says Sr. Chelsea Bethany (@srchelseabethany), who snaps pictures of her life in the convent, in an interview with Mashable UK. “I thought it would be a cool way to give people, especially teens, a look into religious life.” From selfies to pictures of food to little notes of encouragement, her photos are all about being in the moment and finding joy in the little things.
Our own Sr. Theresa Aletheia (@pursuedbytruth), adds: “We see ourselves as doing what St. Paul would be doing in the world if he were here today.” Before entering the Daughters of St. Paul, she didn’t enjoy social media and thought that Snapchat was silly; now, she’s a religious sister devoted to evangelization through social media and she snaps her everyday life regularly. “God had the last laugh,” she joked.
Though some people have criticized them for their use of Snapchat, the sisters say that many people are encouraged by their joy, send them prayer requests, and thank them for the reminders of God’s love.
These little snapshots of their lives given to God are a great reminder of how to engage with our modern culture in a way that glorifies the Lord.
