Police arrested 10 people accused of using encrypted social networks to prepare a possible terrorist attack in France and Switzerland, according to an AP report.
Nine of the arrests in France took place in the Paris suburbs and in the southeastern part of the country, and follow an investigation into suspicious use of the Telegram social network.
The other individual, arrested in Switzerland, is suspected of communicating with people in France on social networks about “unspecified violent acts,” according to the report.
Among the arrested were a 23-year-old Colombian woman and a 27-year-old Swiss man, both suspected of being involved with the Islamic State group.
The arrests come days after France put in place a new counter-terrorism law that replaces the state of emergency that has been in place since the Bataclan concert hall massacre in Paris two years ago. The new law grants police new powers to raid, detain, and question terrorism suspects, and has been the subject of criticism from rights groups who fear it would promote discrimination of Muslims.
