On November 2, 2017, All Saints Day, Pope Francis leaves white roses on the memorial in the Fosse Ardeatine (Ardeatine Caves), the site of a 1944 massacre carried out by German troops occupying Rome in retaliation for a partisan attack on an SS battalion the day before.
