At the General Audience on September 20, 2107, Pope Francis warmly greeted a group of pilgrims from Mexico who performed a few songs and brought him several gifts. Among the gifts were a sombrero, a shawl and a mosaic of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
In his remarks during the catechesis he spoke regarding the earthquake that occurred a day earlier in Mexico City, “At this time of sorrow, I want to express my closeness to, and prayer for, the beloved people of Mexico. Let us all together lift up our prayers to God, that he may gather to his breast those who lost their lives, and comfort the wounded, their families, and all those who have suffered loss.” He continued “May our Mother, the Virgin of Guadalupe, be close to the beloved Mexican nation with great tenderness.”
