With her hair standing up like tentacles, Karen Nyberg explains how she washes her hair in space aboard the International Space Station. As kids, we all learned about astronauts at some point and many wanted to become one, but the dilemma of trying to wash your hair while it’s floating above you is probably not a problem you thought of.

As Karen cleans her hair, making use of no-rinse shampoo and a packet of warm water, water droplets often float away from her, but that’s not a problem thanks to the station’s water processing system.
“As my hair dries, as the water evaporates from my hair, it will become humidity in the air and then our air conditioning system will collect that into condensate,” she explains after finishing the job. “And it won’t be long, and our water processing system will turn that into drinking water.”
During her mission aboard the International Space Station in 2013, Karen attracted social media attention for her videos with school kids, during which she often let her hair float freely above her head rather than confining it to a pony tail.
