Since ancient times, brides have held flowers at their wedding ceremony. Though the composition of bouquets has evolved, the tradition has remained constant. Whether at city hall or in a church, very few brides omit flowers from their celebration. As an integral part of bridal attire, the flowers that compose the bride’s bouquet often reflect her personality and the theme of the event. Though each bouquet is personal, certain flowers are favored for weddings because of their significance, their beauty, their color, or bride’s preference. Aude Anglaret, a florist near Paris, has given us a list of the four flowers most often chosen by brides.
Roses
According to Aude, who owns the Aude Rose boutique in Suresnes, “roses are definitely the most popular flowers in bridal bouquets. I rarely make bouquets without roses.” Arrangements are customized to the taste and personality of the bride, but the rose remains the grande dame of bridal bouquets. A symbol of pure love, it is the perfect flower for a wedding. If the bouquet contains fewer than 10 roses, it is customary to use an odd number of blooms. Red roses, the symbol of passionate love, are often featured in bridal bouquets. Other choices include white, pink, or more rarely, orange roses.
Peonies
“In second place, after the rose, we find the peony, a very romantic, soft, and feminine flower,” explains Aude. A bouquet of peonies symbolizes feminine beauty. Pink peonies evoke romance, while white peonies are slightly subtler. Available only in the months of May and June, they foretell a happy marriage.

Hydrangeas
Though less frequently chosen than roses and peonies, “hydrangeas are becoming ever more popular,” says Aude. Hydrangeas are available in many beautiful hues, including red, violet, blue, and green. Some are even two-toned. Round and soft, this delicate flower evokes love, harmony, and peace. In the language of flowers, it is synonymous with abundant feeling — ideal for a wedding!
Carnations
Adding summer carnations will give your bouquet lovely texture and color. This robust and sweetly perfumed flower symbolizes love and fidelity. Choose red carnations to represent passionate love or white for purity.
