Pope Francis is visiting Colombia this week, and the Músicos Católicos Unidos (United Catholic Musicians) are getting ready to perform for the pontiff. Among them is Sister Maria Valentina de los Angeles, a 28-year-old nun who raps. She will be performing the official anthem of Pope Francis’ visit, “Demos el primer paso” (“Let’s Take the First Step”).
According to MSN, she was asked to join the group after winning a television talent competition called Another Level. She can be seen in the official music video dancing and playing with children and in the larger group shots throughout. She wrote and performed her brief rap interlude.
In an interview with AFP, Sister Maria called it “an opportunity to show him our love the way that we know, which is through music.
“The cool thing about rap,” she continued, “is that it sticks in your head easily. And when it has the depth of truth, which is Christ, then it is even more striking.”
Maria Valentina de los Angeles is part of the Community of Eucharistic Communicators, a female community in Colombia who have placed their talents for music and communication at the service of evangelization, offering them to the world as a bridge between God and mankind. Aside from rapping, she can also play guitar and ukulele.
