A new video released by ISIS threatens Pope Francis and the Catholic Church.
The video, filmed in the Philippines, shows footage of the destruction the terrorist group unleashed on a Catholic church in Marawi, where government forces have clashed with Islamist insurgents since May.
“After all their efforts it would be the religion of the cross that would be broken,” the English-speaking narrator states. “The crusaders’ enmity toward the Muslims only served to embolden a generation of youth.”
The video shows the group destroying a crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary, and leaving the church in flames.
One jihadist is seen holding a photo of Pope Francis and saying “we will make more revenge.”
“We will be in Rome, inshallah [god willing],” he says while pointing his gun at the pope’s picture.
The video, which calls for Muslim extremists to wage a holy war in Marawi, comes in the wake of a series of ISIS’s defeats in the Middle East, and bolsters the theory that the terrorist group is trying to set up their base of operations in Southeast Asia.
