The British Museum just created 3D models of more than 200 artifacts

The British Museum had already offered online access to most of its collection back in 2015, but this is something entirely new. As explained by OpenCulture, they have now published 3D models of more than 200 artifacts belonging to its collection, including the Rosetta Stone, the granite head of Amenemhat III, a statue of the High Priest of Amun, the famous “Jericho Skull” and some Japanese Netsuke figurines, among many others.

Of course, 200 might seem a small number of scans, given the fact the British Museum is home to more than eight million pieces. But, alas! Not all of them are suitable for 3D scanning.

As Daniel Pett, one of the Museum advisers told Digital Trends, “this scan was part of our larger attempt to capture as many of our iconic pieces from the collection — and indeed the unseen in store objects — and make them available for people to view in 3D or in more tactile forms.”
