(FILES) This aerial view taken on June 21, 2017 and provided by Iraq's Joint Operation Command reportedly shows destruction inside Mosul's Nuri mosque compound. Jihadists blew up Mosul's iconic leaning minaret and the adjacent Nuri mosque where their leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a "caliphate" in his only public appearance in 2014, an Iraqi commander said. The Islamic State group swiftly issued a statement via its Amaq propaganda agency blaming a US strike for the destruction of the Nuri mosque and the historic leaning Hadba minaret in its vicinity.

Iraqi forces have successfully confined the so-called Islamic State militia into a square mile of territory within Mosul’s “Old City”.

ISIS seized Mosul back in 2014. The operation to retake the city from the so-called Islamic State militia began last October. After Iraqi forces recovered the eastern half of the city in January, they have been steadily re-gaining ground in all areas of the city, and now the offensive against ISIS is in its final stage.

As reported by BBC, although ISIS deployed suicide bombers in different areas north of the city, the situation is under control, according to Iraqi officials, who have now captured the district of Al-Faruq, in the northwest of the city.

This means ISIS’ forces are now confined to barely a square mile of territory within Mosul’s “Old City”.
