Senator Larissa Waters recently passed a motion regarding lung disease, but why is it making the news? Well, she gave her speech to parliament while breastfeeding — a first in Australian parliament history.
Earlier this year, Waters made history by becoming the first senator to breastfeed during a session of parliament, and, after some troubling reactions, she decided to take the opportunity to go the next step.
The senator explained her reasons, saying, “black lung disease is back among coal miners in Queensland and Alia was hungry.”
She added that “women have always worked and reared children, whether that work was paid in the workplace or unpaid in the home” and hopes that her decision helps remove any bias against mothers breastfeeding in public.
