Lifeguard put to the test on day one: Saves 4-year-old

J-P Mauro - published on 06/15/17

A hero after only 20 minutes on the job...

A 15-year-old lifeguard, Jack Viglianco, made a big splash his first day on the job, when he rescued a 4-year-old boy from drowning.

Only 20 minutes into his shift, Jack saw the boy waving his arms and crying for help, and he rushed to the rescue. His boss, pool manager Matt Demaline, took pride in his freshman employee, speaking to the Daily News about the incident.

“He got down off the chair and jumped in and helped the kid to safety. He had just completed also a five-hour orientation the day before for all of our new and returning staff and we were ready to go, day one.”

Jack explained that even though the boy could speak, he was still actively drowning. Thanks to Viglianco’s efforts the boy suffered no harm.

Humbled by the experience, Jack looks forward to guarding lives for the rest of the summer:

“I was realizing that I just saved a kid’s life,” he told WJW. “And that is something not many other people can say. Nothing my friends have ever said.”

Now that summer is here, it’s a good time to remind ourselves that the signs of drowning are not always obvious.
