Aileen Cooper, a 98-year-old grandmother, started writing to soldiers deployed overseas when she was a young woman during World War II. Since that time, she’s written more than 7,000 letters, all handwritten, at least four pages long, and all unique.
Her letters have changed with the times—while she once must have written about about the latest Gary Cooper movie or Billie Holiday song, today she signs off in text-speak: “TTYL (talk to you later).”
Luckily for the grateful servicemen and women who receive her letters, Cooper shows no signs of wanting to quit.
“I’ve decided that I’m going to write as long as I can,” she said.
