Normally when brides search for their little something blue they choose a select piece of jewelry or a pretty blue flower to add to their bouquet. But bride-to-be Alison Ferrell from Missouri opted for a someone blue, her nonagenarian uncle who had served as a sergeant in the Marines during World War II.

Back in the fall, Ferrell’s uncle Bill Lee Eblen contracted pneumonia, so when she went to visit him in hospital she asked him to don his blue Marine uniform once more and be her something blue on her wedding day in May. This thoughtful request gave Eblen the impetus to get better and be there with his niece on her special day. And when a nurse asked him from his hospital bed “What’s your goal?”, he simply said “To be her ‘something blue’ on her wedding day.” And as you can see from the heart-warming photos she shared with Love What Matters, like every Marine, he rose to the challenge.
Dressed in his Marine blues, complete with medals, the dashing sergeant was wheeled down the aisle to be a token of good luck for the beautiful bride. Eblen, who had served in combat on Naha in Okinawa, proved how his love for his niece could be a healing force. And more importantly his niece reminded us how weddings are a time for love and appreciation, not just for the couple getting married, but for the whole family who helped make the bride and groom the people they are today. And the story gives a valuable lesson to us all in remembering that our elderly relatives will always try and support us, and we should never forget to support them.
