How perfectly our hearts are made for love
David Leonard and Leslie Jordan, the artists behind All Sons & Daughters, are bringing a really hip sound to worship music. “You Are Love and Love Alone,” off their 2016 album Poets & Saints, creates a peaceful, prayerful atmosphere with an earnest ear-worm of a hook. Leslie’s voice is perfectly suited to the pop-folk sound that All Sons & Daughters excel at producing.
At their website the band discusses “You Are Love and Love Alone”:
…the lyric pays homage to Saint Therese, a French Catholic nun who often referred to her spiritual devotion as “the little way.” The words for the song were adapted from a 19th-century hymn penned by English writer and Westminster Abbey Canon Frederic William Farrar. Honoring both Therese and Farrar, the song is simply a message to “love in a simple, meaningful way,” says Leslie. “It’s the little moments in life that make a huge impact.”
Poets & Saints was more than just an album. Inspired by faith writers and saints, the band journeyed with their pastor, Jamie George, a film crew and others to Europe to follow the lives of C.S. Lewis, John Newton, Saint Therese, Saint Francis, William Cowper, Saint Augustine and George MacDonald:
Alongside the album is Jamie’s book, Poets and Saints: Eternal Insight, Extravagant Love, Ordinary People. In addition, Jamie, David and Leslie collaborated to create a Poets & Saints video-based curriculum and study guide resources that together form an interactive worship experience that introduces important influencers in Christendom, while making a very human connection between their lives and ours.
