VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis today launched a new appeal for the people of Syria, following Tuesday’s chemical weapons attack in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, in Idlib. Sarin gas is suspected.
“We have seen and are horrified by the the latest events in Syria,” the pope said following his weekly general audience in St. Peter’s Square this morning. “I express my strong disapproval of the unacceptable massacre that occurred yesterday in the Idlib province, where dozens of civilians were killed, including many children.”
He continued: “I pray for the victims and their families, and I appeal to the conscience of those who have political responsibilities, locally and internationally, to put at end to this tragedy and to bring relief to that dear population which for too long has been overwhelmed by war.”
Pope Francis also encouraged relief efforts of those who, “despite insecurity and discomfort” are “striving to bring help” to the people of Syria.
