So, what are you reading, Carrie Gress?

There are worriers, and there are warriors, and the eternal mystery of how men and women work together goes on...

[Aleteia loves books but recognizes that a world busy with social media doesn’t afford many prompts to that old conversation-starter, “Read any good books lately?” So, we’re asking it in this space. Here, frequent Aleteia contributor Carrie Gress, PhD shares what she’s got on her bedside table at the moment. – Ed.]

I first heard about Warriors and Worriers: The Survival of the Sexes when a priest friend sent me this podcast from The Art of Manliness. I’m fascinated by the different ways men and women approach the same issues. Marriage [and family dynamics] only makes those differences more pronounced.

Gress has a doctorate in Philosophy and her background would suggest that the book has little to say to her that is new, yet Gress has found a few surprises: “What I didn’t expect to find in this book was the why behind all the social drama that exists between women. The author even explains the techniques women use to ‘neutralize’ women they perceive to be a threat.”

Is she liking it? Yes, says Gress, but given what she’s reading about the wiles and ways of men and women, “I’ll never be able to watch daytime TV the same way again!”

“This is not a book for those looking for politically correct categories of men and women,” Gress concludes. “It’s for those who haven’t found a decoder ring for the opposite sex (or even their own sex).”

O mystery! You are alive in us still.
