Vasari’s “Allegory of Patience” still draws amazement

Zoe Romanowsky - published on 01/29/17

The 'Allegory of Patience' greatly influenced 16th-century Europe

This painting — designed by Giorgio Vasari but painted by a lesser-known Spaniard named Gaspar Becerra — was one of the most important in Europe in the 16th century because it was the first time virtue was depicted in such a way. It was commissioned in 1550 by a bishop who wanted a ground-breaking painting depicting character and virtue. Vasari succeeded. Part of the Medici family collection, “The Allegory of Patience” had a huge impact on the art world and on many European courts.
